Week 4 Update

1st XI lost to Hampsthwaite, 2nd XI beat Pannal 2nds and the 3rds lost to Staveley 2nds.

1st XI v Hampsthwaite—match report— disappointing result losing by 19 runs in a game that really showed some great cricket at times.

In a nut shell, bowling ok, batting, okish and fielding poor. Extras and misfields costing us in the region of 30odd runs which was certainly the difference, Hamps in reply not misfielding a single ball and taking a couple of good catches.

The game started well with Lenny bowling good lines with good pace and picking up four wickets, that 13 now already. However the misfields would cost us as Hamps posted 179-7.

This is still a total we should knock off on a good Newby deck with some pace and bounce in it. We started quite slowly but Olie and Adder put on the best part of 90 but when they fell in quick time Hamps smelt victory. Having to go for it from the off Singles looked good until he was run out from the boundry with a direct hit, symptomatic of our luck on the day and other fell around but an injured Porky and Paul Ainlsey batted out for the point.

New Season, new faces, new ground

Week 3 of the season and Newby 1st XI find themselves at the top of the league already.  3 wins out of 3 for new skipper Matt Uffindall over Goldsborough, Kirkby Malzeard and newly promoted Bolton Abbey.  Perhaps performance of the season so far was Newby 2nds against Scotton.  Batting first and making 183-4, Damian Garvey 83 not out and skipper Allen 61, the 2nds then bowled Scotton out for just 93.

Lennie Signs At Last!

Newby Hall CC are delighted to announce that after many seasons of to-ing and fro-ing at last Lenny McKittrick has signed on the dotted line and joined the club. Lenny who has played at local rivals Hampsthwiate for a number of years now has decided that he needed a fresh challenge and will join us as our overseas. It was hoped that Lenny would not be classed as overseas this year but with the change in UK immigration law in January Lenny has to complete one more year. This has an obvious knock effect to Rob Stokes who was joining us as our overseas. Rob fully understand the strange situation we are in and will still join us for evening league, training and all our social events but will now play his Saturday games with our good friends at West Tanfield CC.

In addition to Lenny signing, old boys Paul Virr and Steve Potter will also be donning the whites this seasons. Paul has been playing in Scarborough but will return to the club closest to his heart to open the batting and to vie for the gloves in the first team. Steve is also returning after a break away from the game and will shore up the middle order with his aggressive batting manner as well as his commitment in the field.

The club have also secured the services of Delroy Rudd from Knaresborough Forrest. Del is aggressive top order batsman who will contribute with the bat as well as at the bar! Add to this the arrivals of Mike and Paul Ainsley as well as the full availability of Ryan Devine and Eddie 'Slug' Jakeman for the season the club's position is looking healthy.

First team captain Matt Uffindall is delighted, " I think a few people were unsure how things would go when Olie [Uffindall] and Yanks [Karl Jankowicz] left, however it is very pleasing that a number of people have decided to join us. The season will be tough for the whole club but we now have a pool of players who can contribute for all teams and there will be competition for places and that is bound to be healthy, getting Lenny and Steve is a massive bonus as well as all the other lads"

And Matt doesn’t think that the transfers have stopped there, speaking at the highly successful Sportsman’s Dinner last Saturday he had this to add;

 "There is still a couple of people who have said they would like a game, some of the young lads are pushing through the academy now and the future is looking healthy. There is still one other player who I would love to have join us, he knows who he is and I hope he decides to join"

The club start ground work this Saturday from 10am and would like as many people there as possible to help. There is also a signing on night at the clubhouse on Friday 11th April. This is an opportunity for all members to pay their subscriptions and get together before the start of the season. The first outdoor senior training session takes place that night from 6-15pm and is followed by supper and beers in the clubhouse. PC Sports from Yeadon will also be there with equipment for sale at very reasonable prices. There is also a friendly on the Saturday against Rainton who secured promotion to division 2 last year.
